5 questions with…Center for Community Partnerships Director Latisha James

Helping others is not only part of Latisha James’s job description; it’s a major part of who she is as an individual. That’s why she is so proud of her work as the director of the university’s Center for Community Partnerships. Through her position, she gets to work with faculty, staff and students to help the Cleveland community—most notably by organizing the university’s annual day of service, Case for Community Day.

A resident of Cleveland Heights, James also is actively involved in her community, where she loves checking out local art and music festivals—especially Wade Oval Wednesdays here in University Circle—and attending church with her family at New Community Bible Fellowship.

1. What superpower would you most like to have?
Believe it or not, I wish I could have a “love laser.” I know that may sound very corny, but it’s true. In my opinion, love is the root of all good things. When you love yourself, you’re able to love others. There are so many people hurting emotionally, physically and spiritually today that you know if they just felt they were loved, they could face another day. Blame it on my mom; she raised a “love bug.”

2. What’s your favorite place to dine in Cleveland?
My favorite place to dine in Cleveland would be Sergio’s Sarava’s in Shaker Square. The food, cozy atmosphere and Brazilian music are perfect to the senses, and the staff and owner, Sergio, are wonderful hosts. I especially like Sarava’s during the summer when you can sit outside and watch the sunset.

3. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A veterinarian. I loved animals so much—particularly dogs—that I wanted to help every animal in need. I used to envision myself having a farm for all rescue dogs and pets.

4. What accomplishments are you most proud of—personally and professionally?
Personally, I am most proud of my son, Austin. He is a high school senior this year and preparing for life’s next big transition to attend college this fall. He’s a straight A student and simply a remarkable young man. I am very proud of him and enjoy him as a person immensely.

Professionally, I am most proud of contributing to increasing the awareness about the university’s impressive commitment to community engagement and the positive impact we provide for others.

5. What’s your favorite thing about Case Western Reserve University?
My favorite thing about Case Western Reserve University is our passion and commitment to serve the needs of the community. Regardless of the demanding work and academic responsibilities of our faculty, staff and students, time is always made to volunteer in the community year-round. Serving the needs of others is part of our DNA at CWRU, and I think it’s simply wonderful.

CWRU is so lucky to have Latisha! She is tireless in her efforts to forge lasting ties between our campus and the broader community, and she teaches our students how to be effective leaders and responsible, engaged citizens (both by her actions and by her example). Can we clone her?

I was pleased to see the interview of Latisha. She has been an inspiration for many at CWRU for a long time. I’ve worked with her on Case for Community Day since she arrived at Case. She took our little community service day for staff and expanded it to include Faculty, Staff and Students. It’s been an amazing ride. On behalf of the Staff Advisory Council, Staff Recognition Committee we’re happy to see one of our own recognized for her efforts.
    Thanks Latisha- – -rgk
