CWRU’s book sale moves to Veale Center with the arrival of 80,000 items

Photo of the Case Western Reserve University book saleThe 67th annual Association for Continuing Education Book Sale at Case Western Reserve University will move to a new location this year because of a record number of donations.

The sale is June 1-4 at Veale Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center. The move from Adelbert Gym, where the event has been held for more than 60 years, was prompted by donations of 80,000 items from private collectors, estates, professional libraries, alumni and the public. Sale items include books, DVDs, CDs, record albums and more.

The sale is organized in 11 categories, such as art, children’s literature, cooking and gardening, history, religion and travel.

Among this year’s rare finds are Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer (1876 first printing and rebound in original blue cloth boards); Toni Morrison’s Sula; and Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Generous donations of music came from private collections and include works from the Society for the Publication of American Music and considerable amounts of solo instrumental and vocal, woodwind quintet, string quartet and church music (both choral and organ).

Also among the special-interest collections are children’s literature and easy readers as well as books on: film, including Disney films and others on actors, directors and technical (sound, lighting, costume, sets); golfing; cooking; Native American history, art, culture, customs and chiefs; military history, particularly World War I and II and the Civil War.
